In addition to offering a vacation haven like no other, I am so pleased to announce increased air service and welcome travelers from the east coast of the U.S. as JetBlue Airways launched (in June 2015) nonstop, twice weekly service from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport. Also, Delta Airlines announced increased winter service (starting December 19, 2015 ) from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, including two additional flights during the peak holiday season providing three weekly flights on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Recognizing the draw of Grenada, airlines are making it more convenient to bring you here to our little slice of paradise.

On a personal level, I am so very proud of our Spice family - and the property itself - for having been bestowed the coveted Six Star Diamond Award by the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences this past June. This award was a true benchmark for the luxury hospitality sector.

On June 8, 2015, Spice Island Beach Resort was bestowed with the coveted Six Star Diamond Award by the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences (AAHS) for the second consecutive year.

The American Academy of Hospitality Sciences specializes in reviewing hotels, resorts, spas, airlines, cruise lines, automobiles, products, restaurants and chefs, and is most notably known for its International Star Diamond Award. The award is the most prestigious honor of true excellence in hospitality, gastronomy, attitude, quality, cleanliness and service.

The award was presented by Joseph Cinque, CEO of AAHS, in front of a gathering of key industry executives with more than 30 top-producing travel agents in the audience. In addition to receiving the Six Star Diamond Award, AAHS executives surprised Sir Royston Hopkin, KCMG, Spice Island Beach Resort's chairman and managing director, with the presentation of a display case featuring a boxing glove signed with a written message to Sir Royston from legendary boxing great Mohammed Ali.
Continuing his commitment to support the educational journey of Grenada's youth, Sir Royston presented scholarships to 13 students as part of the Sir Royston Hopkin Scholarship Programme. The recipients were presented with awards in the form of vouchers redeemable for school supplies and tablets.

Atwell Redhead, Handyman in the Maintenance Department is the Employee of the Month for July, 2015. Atwell was voted winner from a field of four nominees.

This is not the first time that Atwell has been nominated or won the Employee of the Month. Atwell has consistently performed at an optimal level in many areas of the maintenance department including his most recent efforts to install bath tubs in the rooms in a timely manner. These completed installations have facilitated the Resort's ability to quickly turn around rooms. He assists his team to get the tasks done quickly and efficiently, wherever the needs arise without any complaints. Read More >>

Long-time Front Office anchor and Spice Island Ambassador, Hermian Griffith has been promoted to the position of Front Office Manager. This promotion elevates Ms. Griffith to the middle management team, giving her full responsibility for her department in particular.

Hermian joined the resort in August 1999 prior to its closure due to Hurricane Ivan in 2004. Since the resort's reopening in 2005, Ms. Griffith has continued to play an integral part in the front office department, giving guidance to all employees who joined us at the time. She is responsible for training a number of receptionists and her contribution to the weddings department as well as Sir Royston's Scholarship Programme is no secret as she plays a leading role in the overall running of the front office operation.

As a company, we continue to place emphasis on our most valuable asset, our human resource. Our success comes through the hard work and dedication of all our team and we would once again like to congratulate Hermian Griffith on her well deserved promotion.

Nerissa's wedding
On July 4th, 2015, our very own Director and Deputy General Manager, Nerissa Hopkin married her partner of five years, Neil Duncan, in a beautiful ceremony held at the St. George's Methodist Church near the heart of the capital. The ceremony was well attended with family and friends and was the perfect setting for the newlyweds to share their first moments as Husband and Wife.

It was a celebratory affair at the reception ceremony which was catered for by the resort and hosted at Blue Horizon's Garden Resort. Speeches from Sir Royston, other family members and friends, recalled many stories of the newlyweds courting, with many humorous, some emotional and a few tales that - due to special request - will not be repeated. Exactly one year ago the Spice family was asked to congratulate Ellis Thomas on his promotion. Please join us once again in congratulating Ellis Thomas, who has been promoted yet again to the position of Junior Sous Chef effective 01st July, 2015.

Ellis has continued to demonstrate consistency in his performance and takes a leading role in the preparation of dinner. He arrives hours ahead of his scheduled shift just to set up the dinner team for success. He is also very hard working and helpful ensuring that he assists the breakfast and lunch teams when he is on duty in the early hours of the day.

Marsha Mitchell has also been promoted to the position of Demi-Chef-de-Partie. Marsha has been with the resort for over nine years and has been very supportive to the Chef de-Partie, Sidon Fraser. She has in fact been mostly responsible for ensuring that the bake shop's requisitions are completed daily, so that they have all the ingredients needed to function.

The resort continues to place emphasis on employee development and promotions from within, where possible. The most valuable asset we have at the resort is our staff and we continue to take pride in rewarding performance when it is deserved.

Mrs Brenda Joseph - Sous Chef in our Kitchen department has won the award of Supervisor of the Second Quarter for 2015.

Brenda has won this award on a number of occasions which is a clear indication of her consistent outstanding performance. She continues to be the backbone of the kitchen, supervising and working on both breakfast and lunch meal periods. Brenda also has full responsibility for the kitchen's administrative. During the second quarter of 2015 our Head Chef was on three weeks' vacation and Brenda took full responsibility for the kitchen operation, often doing double shifts (6:30 a.m. - 11:00 p.m.) to keep the operation going.

Brenda could be counted on to show up for work even when she is not feeling well and has worked without a voice for a number of weeks during this quarter.

The Runner-up was Maintenance Supervisor Allan Mitchell who amidst challenges with his eyes demonstrated loyalty by showing up for work and supervising a number of projects to their completion.

These two outstanding individuals continue to set a perfect example for others to follow.

Having recently undergone a few renovations we would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to the new Nutmeg Pod. Our Nutmeg Princess remains the artistic focal point of the Pod and along with the new colouring scheme and accents it serves to inspire our young guests to delve into their own creative talents in our newly added arts and crafts section.

But for those kids who prefer more modern entertainment, the Pod features a 60" Flat screen LCD TV, perfect for the afternoon matinee which, when paired with popcorn made fresh with the Pod's own popcorn machine, makes for an afternoon of entertainment that everyone can enjoy. The Nintendo Wii is also a favourite that keeps kids engaged and sometimes can also spark the friendly competitive spirit that forges lifelong memories.

Our Children's Activities Coordinators are on duty each day and supervise all playtime, art, craft and other activities.

We look forward to welcoming your children to the New Nutmeg Pod and introducing them to all the new features and amenities.
