For most of our valued guests, it's the tranquil ambiance and the way we treat them like part of the family that has them returning to Spice Island Beach Resort. That doesn't mean there aren't other pursuits which may capture their interest on the resource-rich island of Grenada.

Grenada offers a treasure trove of natural highlights as well as cultural gems for the 'on the go' travelers who like to balance their time relaxing on the beach or at the poolside with the occasional island excursion. We therefore thought we would dedicate this edition of 'Life At Spice' to active pursuits. Perhaps you'll get a couple of ideas for activities that pique your interest, or something you might recommend to a friend or client?

From terrific scuba diving to romantic sailing experiences, there's plenty to do in Grenada both above and below sea level. There are also numerous hiking trails for those who are interested in exploring the island's natural splendors. These nature tours are particularly appealing to families traveling during the summer.

Whilst we're on the topic of families, our Nutmeg Pod features plenty of supervised activities for children aged 3 to 12 so that parents can slip away to enjoy some romantic time.

For those who want the full Grenada experience, our concierge recommends Mandoo's island tour. From the picturesque harbor below Archibald Avenue to the magnificent Concord Waterfalls, the tour encompasses some of our best natural attractions, before venturing into spice and rum territory for a little cultural intrigue.

Of course, everything can be arranged on-property at the Front Desk or Concierge to ensure a seamless experience from pick-up to drop-off.

On behalf of all your friends at Spice Island Beach Resort, I wish you a wonderful summer and hope to see you in Grenada soon!

Sir Royston O. Hopkin, KCMG
Chairman, Spice Island Beach Resort

Grenada is an island many persons outside the Caribbean may know little about. Some pronounce it Granada instead of Gre-nay-da, as all the guide books explain. But whatever you call it, it is home to us and we want to share its many natural resources and treasures with the world.

Just 21 miles long by 12 miles wide, Grenada's verdant landscape has a pungent fragrance in the air, especially if you venture through winding roads into the lush interior. Its mountainous terrain keeps the air fresh and breezy and provides a dramatic backdrop to the photos visitors capture as memories of a fun-filled holiday. Read More >>

By Robert Platts, repeat guest from Guernsey

For me, cycling has always been a love hate thing. I love the sense of freedom, the views and the fresh air, but I hate the hills.

A few years ago, on Christmas day, I decided to cycle into St. George's*. It's usually a busy place, with thousands of people and cars going about their business with perhaps more pace than you'd usually expect from a Caribbean city. The place has a vibrancy that is infectious; it's full of colour and noise and tropical smells. Cycling in on Christmas day however, was rather different. Read More >>

At Spice Island Beach Resort, we're not just paying lip service when we speak of "the royal treatment." A few months ago, we welcomed Their Royal Highnesses The Earl and Countess of Wessex, who were in Grenada on behalf of Her Majesty The Queen in commemoration of the Diamond Jubilee. A state luncheon was held at the resort on Monday, February 27 in honour of Their Royal Highnesses and the historic occasion.

Sir Royston and Lady Hopkin were on hand to greet The Earl and Countess of Wessex. Quite unexpectedly, Their Royal Highnesses took the time to greet guests of the resort before being escorted to Oliver's Restaurant. Following the state luncheon, Their Royal Highnesses presented Gold Awards to members of The Duke of Edinburgh's Awards Programme. The entire Spice family was proud to welcome The Earl and Countess of Wessex. We are truly honoured to have hosted Their Royal Highnesses during their brief visit to Grenada.

Their Royal Highnesses are the latest in a long list of distinguished royalty and celebrities to be hosted by the world-renowned resort, including Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, who spent the night at Spice Island Beach Resort last summer.

Situated on a magnificent three-mile stretch of Grand Anse Beach, we're proud to be the first stop for so many newlywed couples who choose to honeymoon at Spice Island Beach Resort. For an extra touch, couples may choose our 'Spice Up Your Honeymoon' package to create endless memories.

Find your suite adorned with fresh tropical fruits and flowers as well as a bottle of champagne, which you can open upon arrival or enjoy during a sumptuous gourmet dinner on your private patio or balcony.

To awaken your senses and welcome you to the beautiful Caribbean, you will also find in your suite the natural soothing gel of the Aloe Vera picked from the resort's gardens, along with the energizing and refreshing Seamoss - a delightful milky concoction of seaweed and cinnamon - and a basket of spice-scented body oils.

Indulge in your first blissful moments as husband and wife with a luxurious and relaxing Couple's Massage in the tranquil 5,500 sq. foot Janissa's Spa.

To complete this special moment, what could be more perfect than sailing into the sunset on a lazy afternoon cruise along Grenada's Leeward Coast? Exchange loving embraces as the tropical sun slips below the waves.

The supplemental "Spice Up Your Honeymoon" package includes all of the above for a modest $500 in addition to the cost of the room, plus 10% service charge and 15%VAT.

At the Nutmeg Pod - our indoor children's activity centre for guests aged 3 - 12 years - our Coordinators have planned an interesting array of daily activities. In a few short weeks, we will be looking out and hoping to see baby turtles scurrying to find their way into the Caribbean Sea to begin their new life. On Good Friday, resort guests received the thrill of a lifetime when a large leatherback turtle appeared on the sand.

We have had turtles come and nest on our beach over the years. Usually though, it has been at night, denying onlookers a detailed view of the mechanics of this intricate nesting operation. However, on Good Friday in the late afternoon, guests who were swimming saw the large mass appear and amble on to the sand! Word spread quickly and soon a crowd had gathered. A mixture of the young and not-so-young, they were all excited to be viewing this spectacle live for the first time. We christened the turtle 'Lady Friday'. Read More >>

We are pleased to announce the following awards for Employee of the Month for January to April, as well as the Supervisor of the 1st Quarter for 2012.

Darvina Matthew
• Wedding Coordinator/Receptionist

Like a rose which starts off as a bud then blossoms, so too has Darvina grown during her six years with the Resort. She is one of our most versatile Front Office employees having never been afraid to take on added responsibilities. In addition to working at the Reception desk, Darvina can help customers with duty-free purchases in Gatsby Boutique or plan and execute their wedding.

Just recently, she started training in Reservations, adding to her portfolio of skills and embodying Sir Royston's emphasis on personal development.

Nyron Phillip
• Pastry Chef

Nyron's journey at Spice also makes a great story. He started out as a Steward in the Kitchen six years ago and showed interest in furthering his skills. The Bake Shop, with all those sweet temptations, was his pick.

Through steady training under our Pastry Chef Phil, Nyron rose to the challenge and was officially transferred in 2009. He continues to improve his knowledge and recently passed the regional certification exam with flying colours, making all of us very proud.

Reynold Noel
• Maintenance Handyman

His nickname is 'Jericho' and he is the epitome of dedication and commitment to the job. Although he travels a long distance from the other side of the island to work daily, Jericho usually arrives early. If he is required to stay late, that's not a problem.

Polite, dependable and with a great work ethic, he is always ready to lend a helping hand in support of his team. He is one of the supporting pillars of the Maintenance department.

Donnette Stuart
• Front Office Coordinator

Donnette's is the face you may never see during your vacation. Yet, without her contribution, guests' stay may not start out as smoothly as it usually does. Her main role is in Reservations, answering the many queries received from prospective guests, tour operators and travel agents. She is known for her excellent communication skills, which also includes quick responses to those enquiries.

During her six years at the resort, Donnette has focussed on personal development, successfully completing many certification courses.

Allister Welsh
• Food & Beverage Service Supervisor

Allister is well known amongst our large family of repeat guests and he continues to build great rapport and relationships with them as well as first time visitors. Guest satisfaction is his number one priority and he adds a certain "je ne sais quoi" to the dining experience of all guests. Never without a bright smile, Allister can be relied upon to carry out Sir Royston's service philosophy of creating memorable experiences for all guests.

He has the added distinction of winning our recent Cutest Baby photo competition. Well deserved, wouldn't you say?
