DEAR FRIENDS OF SPICE
February symbolizes love and romance in every part of the world. But when we say "love is in the air" here at Spice, we're referring to a whole lot more. Indeed, the blending aromas of exotic spices and tropical flowers against the backdrop of the majestic ocean create a romantic ambiance at Spice Island Beach Resort.
For many years, our experienced team has specialized in tailoring destination weddings according to couples' expectations, leaving them to fully enjoy their vacation. If they should return to us, we'll have an exclusive treat waiting for them.
Honeymooning couples find the tranquil environment of Spice to be somewhere they can unwind after the sometimes stressful job of planning a wedding. Our 'Spice Up Your Honeymoon' Package adds that "extra touch" to the experience.
In this issue, we feature romance packages at Spice, updates on additional air service to Grenada, along with a recipe created especially for you by our Head Chef. This quarterly newsletter is not complete without highlighting the shining stars who take care of the details, leaving guests to focus on what's truly important - celebrating their love for each other.

CHOCOLATE VERSUS YLANG YLANG
It is said that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach. While this is often the case, in the field of massage therapy, practitioners have found they can accomplish a lot more with Ylang Ylang. Derived from the flowers of Ylang Ylang trees (botanical name: Cananga Odorata) which grow in Madagascar and parts of Southeast Asia, Ylang Ylang is a versatile oil used not only for pain relief, but also for its cardio and respiratory benefits, as well as its euphoric characteristics that can leave a man feeling extremely relaxed. CONGRATULATIONS SPICE SUPERSTARS!
Sous Chef Brenda Joseph and Maintenance Handyman Valdon Noel are Spice Island Beach Resort's Supervisor and Employee of the Year, respectively, for 2011. Cristell Richardson, Cocktail Waitress, copped the Guest Service Champion award. These winners, along with other awardees, were announced in a ceremony held on January 16, 2012.
Every January, the resort's management team selects the Supervisor of the Year from quarterly winners throughout the previous year, while all managers and supervisors cast their votes for the Employee of the Year from the monthly award winners. The Guest Service Champion is selected by guests, who are invited to name those employees who make their stay memorable.
Selected solely by Sir Royston, the winner of the 2011 Chairman's Award was Andres Richard, the resort's Food & Beverage Cost Controller.
In his opening remarks, Sir Royston set the tone for 2012 declaring it the year of personal development. In keeping with this theme, most of the major prizes included computers and lap tops.
SUPERVISOR OF THE YEAR 2011
Brenda Joseph • Sous Chef
A stalwart in our Kitchen for over two decades, Brenda could be nicknamed "Mrs. Dependable." Never one to turn down a challenge, the many accolades this one-time Dishwasher has received speaks volumes for her efficiency and dedication to excellence.

GUEST SERVICE CHAMPION 2011
Cristell Richardson • Cocktail Waitress
From the minute she interned here from the local college in 2008, we knew that Cristell would be a guest favourite. With her genuine and caring nature, guests truly feel well served and they were generous in their praise of her service. She remembers their favourite drinks and has them ready before they ask. Cristell's interpersonal skills are well suited for this industry and we see her going on to greater levels of achievement in the future.
CHAIRMAN'S AWARD 2011
Andres Richard • Food & Beverage Cost Controller
It takes a lot to get Andres ruffled. With a very calm disposition, he goes about his duties quietly, ensuringsupplies are ordered to keep all outlets and the Kitchen well stocked. He is noted for his versatility as he is sometimes decked out in long sleeve shirt and tie making drinks for guests.
A REWARDING CAREER PATH AWAITS GRAND ANSE YOUTH
Christmas came early for the 40 wide-eyed Grade 4 students of the Grand Anse Roman Catholic Primary School. Their much anticipated field trip - a highlight of their Tourism Education class taught by some of the resort's managers - took place on Dec. 13.
The day began with a short lesson in the St Andrew's Conference Room, followed by a tour of the resort. The kids' eyes lit up as they observed the expansive private pool in the Royal Ginger Pool Suite. "Oohs and ahs" came next as they marvelled at the marble finished bathrooms. "Miss, I want to live here!" was the common comment.
There were many items in the suites which the students had never seen before. The well-stocked mini bar and the large whirlpool tub were two such fixtures.
In Janissa's Spa & Fitness Centre, the boys wanted to lift weights to demonstrate their strength, while the girls started to dream of a career as a Massage Therapist. This, of course, is the goal of the programme, and our young future professionals now have a clear understanding of the benefits associated with working in the hospitality field.
Lunch time couldn't have come quickly enough. Soon the chicken and rice and peas had disappeared. The vegetables didn't go down as easily, but the promise of ice cream and marble cake for those who finished provided ample incentive.
Before sending them off, the resort's General Manager Brian Hardy asked the children about their perception of jobs in the hotel industry and whether they would like to return to the hotel. "Yes sir!" was the resounding answer. A group photo followed, before they reluctantly boarded the bus to return to their normal school day.
What's your most memorable romantic moment
Sir Royston often enjoys seeing couples' reaction the first time they taste Tamarind ice cream (and order it every day after), or notice for the first time the abundance of stars romantically arranged over the resort. Or how couples seem to lose sight of everything but their partner's eyes as they dance to the steel drums of our Friday night band.
We create for our guests, a memorable experience in an elegant, luxurious and clean environment, where you are welcomed graciously into the friendly Spice Island Beach Resort family. At the same time, you're given the privacy to indulge in blissful togetherness and share those special moments that you'll come back to time and time again in your memories.
As a valued previous guest, we'd love it if you could recall one or two of your favorite moments at Spice Island Beach Resort and share them with us on Facebook.
Have a picture? Even better! With your permission, we'll include it in a subsequent edition of our quarterly newsletter.
