DEAR FRIENDS OF SPICE
As the new year is quickly approaching, many of us are planning activities for 2013. Perhaps you're contemplating a new car or a home remodeling project? Or where to spend your winter holiday?

Regarding the latter, we hope you'll consider spending your vacation with us here at Spice Island Beach Resort. But my message to you today - and the theme of this edition of Life At Spice - is of an entirely different nature.

For those of us who live comfortably, charitable endeavours are one of the ways we give back to our communities. Here at Spice, we're involved in a variety of charities and foundations on island, and support a number of other causes in the Caribbean and overseas.

On a local level, we're particularly involved in the education of our youth. We've adopted our Grand Anse R.C. School and provide monetary assistance to a number of deserving students. We're also extremely proactive in our efforts to demonstrate the value of a strong education and the role tourism can play as a generator of jobs and upward mobility.

While our motivations are altruistic, there can be no denying that we've benefited from our contributions to Grenada's human resources. When I'm told by guests that, in all their travels, they've never felt as welcomed as they do when greeted by our employees and others in Grenada, I can't help but take great pride. Hearing remarks about our hospitable culture reaffirms something I've always believed - that you get out of something only what you're willing to put in. Some of the kids we supported when we first launched our scholarship programme are now employed with us.

In this issue, you'll learn about a number of developments, from our newest Ambassador Kirani James - who brought home Grenada's first gold medal in the 2012 Olympics - to the launch of our new toll-free number. But you'll notice an emphasis on charity.

You'll read about one of our employees who spend much of their precious time away from work volunteering to help others. You'll also learn more about our involvement with the Grand Anse R.C. School and some of the ways guests of the resort have pitched in to support our local youth.

So when planning out your 2013 - or deciding how to allocate your holiday bonus - please keep charitable endeavours in mind. Focus on areas where you feel you can make the biggest impact, and keep in mind that a rejuvenating experience at Spice Island Beach Resort doesn't merely enrich you, it supports the children in our local community.

On behalf of all your friends at Spice Island Beach Resort, I look forward to welcoming you to Grenada soon for your first visit, or to welcoming our loyal repeat guests back.

The Virgin Holidays Platinum Collection had two gold awards this year. The Encore, Las Vegas was the other recipient and Spice Island Beach Resort received a perfect 100% score on the tour operator's customer service questionnaires, earning them the top spot. SPA THERAPIST SPENDS VACATION VOLENTEERING AT QUEEN ELIZABETH HOME

On a routine walk around the resort one morning, Human Resource Development Manager, Michelle McDonald, met Spa Therapist, Mavis Stafford-Mitchell, who had recently returned from her vacation. Rather than travelling or relaxing at home, Mavis revealed that she had spent her time off volunteering at the Queen Elizabeth Home for Children, a Grenadian charity supported by the resort. The home provides shelter and support for poor, orphaned or abused children, giving them access to schooling and further education to integrate them with the wider Grenadian community. Read More >>

CORPORAL DR. JOHNSON BEHARRY, VC VISITS SPICE ISLAND
Spice Island recently welcomed Grenadian-born Corporal Dr. Johnson Beharry for a two-week stay at the resort from Aug. 12 - 26, 2012. Beharry, who moved to England in 1999, received the Victoria Cross Medal in 2005 - the highest of all honors bestowed upon anyone by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.

Beharry, who recently carried the Olympic Torch through the United Kingdom's centre of remembrance to mark Armed Forces Day, was given the prestigious Victoria Cross Medal for his acts of bravery during the time he served in Iraq as a soldier in the British Army. He was also awarded an honorary doctorate in engineering in 2011 from the University of Sussex in recognition of his support of the school's automotive engineering students.

Dr. Beharry's acts of valor and his dedication to the army are deserving of the highest respect, and Spice Island was proud to have had the opportunity to extend its hospitality to him.
SPICE ISLAND DEBUTS NEW TOLL-FREE PHONE NUMBER
Recognizing the needs of its current and prospective guests, Spice Island Beach Resort recently debuted a new toll-free phone line for U.S. and Canadian consumers. The new toll-free phone number, 1-800-501-8603, will allow individuals to contact the resort directly at no charge.

While guests may still coordinate travel arrangements by email, the resort's new toll-free line makes the process of coordinating arrangements easier, especially for events that may require more advanced planning, such as a destination wedding at the resort.

Spice Island realized that with large events such as a wedding, there can be many phone calls back and forth to go over every last detail - and when it comes to planning that special day, the resort does not want their valued guests to be worrying how much the calls will cost.
SPICE WELCOMES OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST KIRANI JAMES
Sir Royston recently had the opportunity to express his gratitude to Kirani James, Grenada's Olympic Gold Medalist, during his stay at the resort from Aug. 31 - Sept. 3, 2012. James was celebrating his first homecoming after his Olympic victory as well as his 20th birthday.

An elated Sir Royston spent time in conversation with James and thanked him for making Grenada proud at the recent 2012 Olympic Games in London - where he won the country's first ever Gold Medal for the men's 400m in track and field - and for raising awareness for the beautiful island of Grenada.

James thanked Sir Royston and the entire staff for their hospitality during his stay and noted that Spice Island Beach Resort is the finest hotel in which he has ever stayed, referring both to the facilities and the service. He also expressed gratitude to Sir Royston, not only for his generosity, but for the time he took to meet with him and offer words of advice and encouragement.
