DEAR FRIENDS OF SPICE
Looking back on our own childhoods, we remember summer as a time of carefree days and family togetherness. Children enjoyed their break from school and now as parents, we spend quality time with our children building lasting memories on family holidays, and wishing they didn’t grow up so fast.

At the resort, summer gives us an opportunity to ensure our facilities remain in pristine condition and enhance our services for guests.

In this issue you'll read about the special packages on offer, new amenities we will be introducing for the Winter Season, programmes at our adopted school as well as recent employee awards. We have also introduced the Recipe Corner featuring one of our dishes which we hope you will try out.

My family and the extended Spice Family thank you for your continued support of Spice Island Beach Resort.

Sir Royston O. Hopkin, KCMG
Chairman, Spice Island Beach Resort

RUBBING ELBOWS WITH ROYALTY AND CELEBRITIES - YOUR FELLOW GUESTS AT SPICE

Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal
Spice Island Beach Resort was a hive of activity in June as it welcomed Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal. Princess Anne presented plaques to young achievers of the Duke of Edinburgh's Awards programme at the resort, where she also spent the night as a guest.

Following the awards reception, The Princess Royal met with participants of the Caribbean-Canada Emerging Leaders' Dialogue (CCELD) – of which the Princess Royal is president – and joined them for a dinner hosted by Sir Royston and Lady Hopkin.

The entire Spice family was proud to welcome The Princess Royal. We are truly honoured Her Royal Highness stayed with us and it was an absolute privilege to have her as our esteemed guest.

DAD'S CTO LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT
AWARD SURPRISE
By Nerissa Hopkin
It's not often that anyone gets to surprise Dad, but together with Brian our General Manager, Dad's brother Arnold, my brother Ryan and sister Janelle, we pulled it off.

I had already planned a trip to New York when the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) announced that Dad was going to be presented with their Lifetime Achievement Award. Since it coincided with the awards dinner on Friday 10th June, he suggested that I attend.  We rarely ever get to holiday together as a family so I thought it would be nice if Janelle, Ryan and Uncle Arnold could be there. More importantly though, it was the opportunity for us to see Dad receive such a prestigious award. I didn't want my uncle and siblings to miss it.

It's little unexpected moments that make life more special so I spoke with Brian and we worked out a plan that would allow for my sister and brother to be off the job and travel to New York.  Soon, all the arrangements were working according to plan...well, mostly. Read More >>

YOU SPOKE, WE LISTENED - IMPROVEMENTS AT SPICE ISLAND BEACH RESORT FOR WINTER
Management at Spice Island Beach Resort routinely monitors comments and suggestions from its valued guests to identify potential areas for improvement.

In this latest round of guest-inspired upgrades, Spice Island Beach Resort is implementing an expansion of its iPod docking station amenities. Previously available in only 12 suites, the iPod docking station/radio combos will be available in all suites for the Winter. Whether you want to enjoy a private dance with your soul mate, or simply recharge your device before your flight home, docking stations will soon be available for all guests' enjoyment.

In other developments, the extended patio areas of all Sea Grape, Cinnamon and Saffron beach suites will be equipped with umbrellas later this year, providing additional shade to enhance those listless days in paradise. And due to popular demand, we will soon have a number of small beachside tables on which guests will be able to conveniently place drinks, books and other personal items.

Your comments are important to us at Spice Island Beach Resort which is why we define the experience based on our discerning guests' wants and needs. So please do not hesitate to give us feedback.

GRAND ANSE SCHOOL WELCOMES SPICE REPEAT GUESTS WITH OPEN ARMS (AND LOTS OF QUESTIONS!)
Committed to the education of Grenadian children, Spice Island Beach Resort "adopted" Grand Anse School in 1992 and began offering secondary school scholarships for students who passed the entrance exam. Every year since, Spice has awarded at least five students with scholarships taking them through seven years of education. The Grand Anse School holds a special place in the hearts of Spice Island's staff and this relationship has crossed over to resort guests – including John and Frederike Stanton, who have been visiting the hotel for several years. RUBBING ELBOWS WITH ROYALTY AND CELEBRITIES - YOUR FELLOW GUESTS AT SPICE

Sherri Shepherd of The View
Guests staying at Spice Island Beach Resort in late March/early April may have noticed the familiar face of The View co-host Sherri Shepherd, who was a guest of the resort along with her fiancé Lamar Sally. The latest in a long list of television personalities spotted at Spice Island Beach Resort, Shepherd and her fiancé did not receive special treatment – that is to say they received the same exceptional, family-oriented brand of quality we provide all of our guests. SPICE STARS ARE REWARDED

Sir Royston says this often: "You can find a resort with an impressive building anywhere, but my guests tell me that our employees are what define their experience at Spice Island Beach Resort."

So in recognition of outstanding service to the resort, he implemented an incentive programme many years ago to reward those team members whose performance goes above and beyond what is expected. Read More >>

INTRODUCING THE JANISSA'S SPA 'TEA MENU'

We take pride in the authenticity of our treatments at Janissa's Spa, using indigenous ingredients and spices in our masks, scrubs and oils. Further perfecting the art of tranquility, we've added exotic herbal teas to the equation to soothe and rejuvenate the senses as well as the body.

All teas served at Janissa's Spa are freshly brewed for each individual and served after treatments as part of our beverage service. Upon arrival, the Spa Receptionist will take your tea order. Hot aromatic teas such as Cinnamomum Zeylanicum, Zingiber Officinale and Cymbopogon Citratus are each recommended to complement different types of treatments. All teas will be served in their natural state along with local Grenadian Honey as sweetener.

Visit the Janissa's Spa section on our new website for a description of each tea and its therapeutic applications.

GRAND ANSE STUDENTS PRESENT 'CAREERS IN TOURISM' PROJECT
In October 2010, the Ministry of Education launched a Tourism Education Programme designed to increase awareness about tourism among Grenadian students. Spice Island Beach Resort volunteered to lend its assistance to the programme by offering the services of tutors to the nearby Grand Anse Roman Catholic School.

Michelle McDonald, human resource development manager for Spice Island Beach Resort, facilitated the classes and was assisted by Nerissa Hopkin, the resort's deputy general manager and director. Together, Michelle and Nerissa worked with the fourth grade class who were placed in four groups of four or five students. Each group chose to examine one of the possible paths in tourism, creating a poster to highlight the career choice along with a three-minute presentation.

At the end of the school year, the students presented their "Careers in Tourism" projects. Ms. Hopkin judged the projects and declared the group that presented "The Accountant" as the winner. The award for the most creative presentation went to "The Bartender," which included a live demonstration of a Pina Colada -- without the rum, of course!

We look forward to welcoming you back to the Spice Isle.
